Scientists from Manchester University, Great Britain, found out that cigarette smoking has negative affect on the eyes.
According to the researchers, more than 17 thousand people lost their eyesight because of cigarettes. According to the statistics, the correlation between smoking and loss of eyesight is as strong as between smoking and lung cancer.
As scientists say, the smoking leads to some form of blindness.
Smoking kills cells of the retina. At the same time the organism of a smoker does not assimilate nutrients from food that are necessary to maintain good eyesight.
Smokers are in danger to have such disease as dystrophy, as well as lung cancer four times higher than among those who do not smoke. Even not so heavy smoker that smoke occasionally, the risk of blindness is in two times higher than that of nonsmokers.
The leader of the group of researches from Manchester University, surgeon-ophthalmologist Simon Kelly, said: «We need to get the important information over the people. We would like to see the warning inscriptions on the cigarette boxes.”
